How to Tackle Stuff Your Kindle Like A Pro: TBR Lists, Downloading Globally, + Any Device (Not Just Kindles!)
New to Stuff Your Kindle or just looking for the best way to go about it? These are my top recs to make SYK a breeze.
Stuff Your Kindle is typically a one-day event where you can download free eBooks. No, you do not need a Kindle to participate. Yes, they are actually free and yours to own as long as you please.
For the best reading experience and to not run into any broken links, be sure to read this in a web browser. The links in the Substack app lately have had some technical difficulties. I’m not sure why, and I’m begging for it to be fixed.
But before we go further, my name is Jinapher. I’m the author of Wrathos Books and the creator/host of Dark Mode books Stuff Your Kindle.
I’m so glad you’re here, and if you’re looking for the best way to say thanks for all the work I’ve put into this website and getting this event together, please subscribe.
The Process In 5 Easy Steps
Masterlist goes live.
Influencer Top Reads goes live (coming soon).
Create a ‘List’ on Amazon with a name like, “July 2024 Dark Mode SYK”
As you find books through Dark Mode, visit their Amazon page and add them to your Amazon TBR list.
On the day of the event, pull up your Amazon list and download down your list!
Downloading Free eBooks
Whether you have a Kindle or not, you can usually still get a Kindle eBook on a different device.
If you don’t have an eReader, the easiest way to get Kindle Books is to download the free Kindle app from your app store. You’ll be able to access them the same way there that you would on a Kindle.
If you have an eReader that isn’t a Kindle, then the best way to find out how to download is to simply do a quick Google search of, “How to download Kindle books to DEVICE NAME”.
Normally, after you grab the free eBooks from your Amazon account (more on that below), you just have to hook up a USB between your eReader and your computer to transfer them over.
How to Grab The Books
Have an Amazon account
Create a ‘List’ on Amazon or your notes (wherever you want, really) for the event
On the day of the event, download from your list with the following process:
Note you can only grab free ebooks from a web browser and not the Amazon app.
From Dark Mode, when you go to a book’s page, there will be a direct link to the book’s page on Amazon.
Please note where the author is located based on your location. If an author is in the USA, but you’re, for example, in the UK, then you will need to switch your Amazon from Amazon UK to Amazon USA to download the book. If that doesn’t work, please understand that Dark Mode and its authors have no control over global distribution. If the book is unavailable for you, we apologize in advance!
After you are redirected to Amazon, you will see this:
NOTE: You want to make sure you’re toggling the “Want to buy” blue link and clicking the “Buy now with 1-Click” button and that the Kindle Price is listed as $0.00.
If you click “Read for Free” with Kindle Unlimited, YOU WILL NOT OWN THE BOOK. That option is only to “borrow” the book through KU.
To own the free eBook and never have to return it, you have to click the Buy now button.
Once you download, it will be auto-sent to your Kindle reading device.
How To Create a TBR List
My recommendation is to create a ‘List’ in Amazon. However, you can totally create your list wherever you want. Just make sure your TBR list is accessible from where you can also get to Amazon on a web browser.
You cannot download free books from the Amazon App.
If you want to create a List on Amazon…
Quoted From Amazon:
To create a List:
Go to Account & Lists and select Your Lists.
Select Create a List and insert a list name.
Select Create List.
Select the three dots menu, and Manage List to update your shipping address and other preferences.
Select Save Changes.
You can repeat this process to create an unlimited number of lists.
You can select Add to List on any item's product details page.
How to Grab Books From Different Locations
If you want to download a free eBook from an author in the USA, but you’re in the UK, for example, then you must change your Amazon from UK to USA.
Quoted From Amazon:
To transfer your account from your existing country to another:
Go to Manage Your Content https://amazon.com/mycontent and click Preferences.
Click Change under Country Settings.
Select or enter your address, and click Update.
If you're eligible to buy digital content from another country, follow on-screen prompts to understand the implications of transferring your Amazon account.
To transfer your digital purchases manually, visit the Content tab under Manage Your Content https://amazon.com/mycontent.
When you’re ready, select the option to transfer your account to complete the process.
To revert the transfer, simply repeat the previously mentioned steps.
International Disclaimer
We may have authors participating that are outside of the United States.
Authors will be required to set their books free on the day of the event, but if they’re international, their books may expire at different times.
If there is an author you’re very interested in, I suggest making sure you’re following them on social media, so when they promote their book is live, you know exactly when it’s available.
Otherwise, the general Dark Mode blast will be sent to all Subscribers at a preannounced time on the day of the event.
